Fungal-induced water repellency in sand

چکیده
Water infiltration into granular soils and the associated pore water pressure increase reduction in shear strength can trigger landslides, instability of vertical cuts failure retaining walls. Water-repellent reduce to maintain soil suction. Recent research has demonstrated creation synthetic water-repellent using chemical methods. This paper investigates a biological treatment for creating sand by way growth fungus Pleurotus ostreatus. repellency was assessed using: (a) drop penetration test; (b) molarity ethanol (c) modified sessile method with contact angle (?) determination image analysis. Fungal-induced found be ‘extreme’ (? > 110°) up 4 weeks ‘severe’ 105°) 12 weeks, even no further supply moisture or nutrients. A layer formed maintained saturated conditions, which is difficult achieve

The temporal evolution of a water-sand interface driven by gravity is experimentally investigated. By means of a Fourier analysis of the evolving interface the growth rates are determined for the different modes appearing in the developing front. To model the observed behavior we apply the idea of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability for two stratified fluids. Carrying out a linear stability analysi...

متن کاملManganese Oxidation Induced by Water Table Fluctuations in a Sand Column
On-off cycles of production wells, especially in bank filtration settings, cause oscillations in the local water table, which can deliver significant amounts of dissolved oxygen (DO) to the shallow groundwater. The potential for DO introduced in this manner to oxidize manganese (Mn), mediated by the obligate aerobe Pseudomonas putida GB-1, was tested in a column of quartz sand fed with anoxic i...
